Kirsty calls for WAG to recognise Mid Wales battle site

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 11th Aug 2009

Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire has called upon the Welsh Government to take greater action to promote and preserve one of Wales' most important heritage sites.

The Pilleth/Bryn Glas battle site, near Knighton and Presteigne in Powys, is one of the most significant battlegrounds in Wales, having been the location of Owain Glyndwr's famous victory in 1402. Despite this the site remains completely unmarked.

Kirsty Williams said:"It is astounding that even under a Plaid Minister, who's party purports such importance on promoting Welsh culture, that this significant national heritage is not being given greater regard.

"This site is an integral part of our history as a nation and the scant interest it has been given officially is in complete contrast to the Bannockburn 1415 site which has been accorded national status by Scotland.

"I have made representations to the Minister calling for the site to be given the recognition it deserves and at the very least for a road sign to the battleground to be erected."
