Powys Residents take Speed Petition to Assembly

The Llanspyddid Resident's Association has this week presented a petition calling for action to improve road safety on the A40 through the village.

The handover follows close in the footsteps of the latest serious car accident on Sunday 6th July which has left the village without a sign. The stretch of road is a busy trunk road and traffic travels at high speeds despite poor visibility through the residential area.

The petition calls for traffic calming measures including a speed limit, improved lighting and improved signage to be installed along the A40 through the Breconshire village

Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon & Radnorshire said: "For years I have supported the Llanspyddid residents in their call for action to make the A40 and the village's junction safer. I hope that this petition will at last lead to action before we see a fatal accident.

"The Association has worked hard to put this comprehensive dossier and petition together, which details accidents over the past years along with support for action from Powys County Council; Dyfed Powys Police and Glyn Tarell Community Council.

"I hope that the petition will be accepted and the process will lead to WAG taking action to implement traffic calming in Llanspyddid to put an end to dangerous and reckless driving through the village."

Local Solicitor and resident, Angharad Woodland, said "The entire village lives in fear of either pulling out of the junction or crossing the road to access the bus route into Brecon and those of us living adjacent to the road find ourselves living in anticipation of the next car landing in our gardens. We desperately need some action to prevent these accidents and to slow down passing motorists".

If the petition is accepted it is expected that it will be considered by the Petitions committee next autumn when the Assembly reconvenes following summer recess.
